Hi – is it possible to place an advert in the header panel (or elsewhere on the site) that is supplied by someone other than Adsense? I have an advert designed specifically for our website, but don’t know how i can get it to appear in the header panel (and elsewhere) without entering code for adsense…
I don’t have an adsense account, but it looks like adsense only supplies advertising from sources that can’t be controlled by us…what if i want to specifically place an advert on the site myself?

Yes, see the theme docs. It shows you how to put in your own ads.
You just need to use HTML to create the three div sizes for responsive layouts, and each of those wraps your ad elements, whether locally hosted graphic, or external one.
Of course knowing the very very basic HTML helps, like an anchor tag (a) or image tag (img) will help.
