Hi, I just upgraded my Newspaper theme from version 4.6 to version 8.1 and the layout simply and totally crashed. Can you help me?

Please keep in mind that what you want to do is a BIG update and the theme will be broken because it is totally another theme, sorry!
In order to achieve the best results after you will install the latest update you have to follow some rigorous steps like this -> you have to delete both of your themes, child theme, and main theme. All your customizations from your Newspaper 4 theme will do not work because all the files from this were changed in Newspaper 8.1 and as the main theme and also you lose all changes.
The Newspaper 8.1 is a whole new theme so an update from 4 to 8.1 may cause the same issues as switching to another theme (but we did try to maintain compatibility where ever possible).
Always make a full backup of your current installation – https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups and then do a clean update, meaning that we recommend that you delete the old version of the theme before uploading the new one – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ update also the plugins that come bundled with the theme files from the /plugins folder. In the “how to update” guide is specified that you will have to run the script that will import from database your settings.
The shortcodes have been changed so old ones will not work anymore. Please note that old files customization or custom CSS will not work with the new version and you will have to adjust or re-add them. Bottom line is that newspaper 8.1 is a whole new theme built from scratch.
Unfortunately, you will have to clear your agenda and spare a bit of time to adjust all your settings to the new version of the theme.

Okay, really bad news.
I might try to rebuild/recufigure almost everything, the problem is that 90% of the elements are not working or mostly not visible. It would be a mad job.
Is there a less recent version (7 maybe?) partially compatible with 4.6 and that allows me to update only changing something? (and not having to rebuild the entire site). I’m doing it for site security reasons.
Buying a later version of the same theme I expected some compatibility, though obviously not total, otherwise I would not have bought it. Can we find a solution (a compromise) using an intermediate version?
It’s a really complex site, I need to keep it secure but it’s impossible to rebuild/reconfigure everything as if installing a new theme.
Alternatively, a step-by-step upgrade (version-by-version) could give a better result? If yes, where can I retrieve the files of all versions?
Probably safest to go to 4.7.2 I think.
You could likely request they send that to you if you provide your proof of purchase code for the theme.

Catalin, no intermediate version that I can use to upgrade without having to rebuild everything? At the moment I’m looking at least at an upgrade that allows me not to have such an old version but that it can be arranged with a reasonable amount of work.

Sorry for this but please notice that our theme does not have any “intermediate” version in this case, sorry! You should recreate your homepage which was made via Visual Composer, add your Widgets in your sidebar because after updating your theme, all of these will appears as deactivated. You should activate all of them and place them in your sidebar.
Verry important is to make a full backup to each theme update. Unfortunately, this theme version is too deprecated and you should make a full update to your theme and WordPress if you want to achieve good results, sorry! Please UPDATE IT. We only can provide a theme versions start from 7th.
