When I click on customise, it loads nothing to the right. I can see the toolbar on the left with the options, however nothing loads on the right.

For me the homepage is loaded on the right of the customize sidebar

If that is not happening for you, then that would mean there is a problem. If you are using an older version of the theme and latest WordPress there could be issues. There were changes in WordPress and theme updates were released to fix various issues. You could consider updating the theme and theme plugins to the latest version if that is the case

I want to update, however if I do I lose all my changes…
That would depend, if you made modifications to the theme files directly they will be lost. Theme panel settings, custom code in the theme panel, pages and posts will not be lost.
If you should decide to update please always do as recommended, make a website backup first.
