1. the instagram footer bar doesn’t load the pictures from my linked instagram (@chapterprogress).
2. even though I have not selected a sidebar option, the front page only shows 2 columns while I need 3.

In your case it will not work however, because of the theme version currently used by the website (7.7). Quite a while back Instagram made changes on their end, we had to make modifications in the theme to keep Instagram working in the theme

Actually with the theme version used there will be problems with most of the socials. Most have modified this or that so we had to adapt. There were many modifications made and new features introduced since that version.
You should consider to update the theme to the latest version 9.5. This is an update guide
