Hi guys,
The last time I updated Newspaper I lost all of my custom sidebar text widgets and had to manually rebuild them from scratch. Will that happen every time I update the theme and required plugins? If so, what do I need to do to prevent that from happening?
Thanks…
Hi,
Please tell me how you made the update last time?
Did you replace the preview version with the one that you update, or you have both of them?

We always recommend to make a full backup to your website before you make an update.
Usually this is not happening, all settings and content that is made remain, only if you made some change in theme files, those are override, also is possible that you have some special characters set in widget those can be removed.

Hi Calin,
I have just experienced this exact same thing, although in my case I hadn’t customised the widgets at all.
I had Newspaper 8 installed with all the default widget / sidebars in place and have just been working on loading articles etc before launch.
I followed the process to upgrade to 9 and had a couple of issues with template menu settings being lost (easy to rectify and re-select the correct menu I want to use in each place).
However, I have also now lost all sidebar settings and all widget settings. So my sidebars are all empty and widgets all have no settings at all – completely gone.
I really don’t want / have time to re-build the default sidebars and widget settings as they were in Newspaper 8 from scratch. Is there a way to recover them or do you have some way I can copy the default setup to get me back up and running quickly?
Is there anyway to ‘backup’ custom sidebar or widget settings in future before doing a theme update?
Please look at ways to avoid these problems with widgets in future.
Thanks,
Tim
Hi,
We recommend to make a backup ( making backup to your website will allow you to revert to the previews version that you have if there are some problem during the update ) to your website before make a theme update, also is indicate to try first on localhost the update or on website test.
There are no individual backup’s for sidebars, sorry!
Please check in appearance > widgets on inactive widgets -> https://www.screencast.com/t/gaoWdVD0 ( is possible that your widgets to be there ).
