I wanted to create additional widget areas besides the default ones that are included with the theme. I didn’t see a thread about this so if there is one I’d gladly follow it.

Apologize I wasn’t more specific. You have a Newspaper default included and just wanted to create one or two widgets to use at various points in the site.

I believe you are referring to widget sidebars, there is indeed a Newspaper default sidebar created by the theme – http://prntscr.com/nr9c0g
You can create as many widget sidebars as you need, they can be created from a few places
