Unable to upgrade from 9.6 to 11.4

Hi — I’ve recently tried to upgrade my site from a much older version (9.6) to the latest version of Newspaper. The integrated tagDiv Composer plugin, which is responsible for my website’s design, appears to have changed a lot between theme versions. I don’t seem to be able to upgrade directly to 11.4. Is it possible to get files containing each major version of the theme from 9.6 to 11.4 to attempt a step-by-step update between versions to assure that the code of connected plugins and theme files does not change significantly? Thanks.

Hi vawn,
Indeed there are some big difference between Newspaper v9.6 and the last one 11.4.2, but the best way to do the update will be directly, indeed there can be problems but will need to be resolved only once, if you make the updated for each versions, in part, then you need to resolve the problems in each update.
What I can suggest is first to make a full backup for your website and database and after that to update the theme (also, you can try first on staging or subdomain).
The theme should be updated via FTP, by replacing the old theme with the new one (replace not overwrite), in case that there are custom changes in the theme files, those will be lost.
After the theme is installed, please install the theme plugins: tagDiv Composer, tagDiv Standard Pack and the rest of the theme plugins that you had before the theme update (social counter, newsletter).
I hope this will help you!

Hi vawn,

I faced a similar issue as well. I was trying to upgrade our website from Newspaper 9.7.2 to 11.4.3, and WPBakery Page Builder from 5.5.2 to (latest version used in Newspaper 11.4.3).

The following steps worked for me (using latest version of WordPress 5.9.3):

  1. Activate WordPress default theme (Twenty Twenty Two)
  2. Deactivate then delete Newspaper 9.7.2
  3. Deactivate then delete WP Bakery Page Builder 5.5.2
  4. Install then activate WP Bakery Page Builder in Newspaper 11.4.3 (from Newspaper folder > code > other_plugins > js_composer.zip)
  5. Install then activate Newspaper 11.4.3 (using Newspaper.zip)
  6. Install/Update theme plugins, especially Standard Pack plugin

Hope this helps!

Cheers 🙂
