Waiting eagerly for guide specific for updating from 4 to 6

As I read through the comments people doesn´t seem to be very happy with all the work that has to be made to upgrade from Newspaper 4 to Newspaper 6. Just checked out the demo of 6 and I must say it looks freaking awesome!

With that said, I would really like to upgrade but there is a guide, written by the developers, for this specific cause missing. Chris´s general guide for updating is OK but it does not cover this upgrade specifically. I know virtually nothing about WP upgrades (hence the reason of buying a premium theme that will do the work automatically for me). I am though totally OK with logging in via FTP, deleting the old theme-files and putting the new ones there instead and then (as some people say but there also is warning presented in the Newspaper 6 documentation ) press a button to import my old settings in to the new theme version.

I do feel very unsure about where those settings are supposed to come from since I would have just deleted the whole folder with my old theme and theme settings. Those kind of questions needs to be answered 🙂

Again, new version looks great. But we novice users that aren´t WP gurus (or not even trainees) need guidance. Can´t wait for it 🙂

Thanks

So… delete old theme folder, put the new folder in there instead and press the button and everything will be done?

Forgive me for being suspicious but the guide gives no explanation to where it finds the old settings after everything is deleted, if the custom css is saved, if the font changes are saved or any other details.

Yes there is a general guide (the one you referred to) but it is not good enough. Sorry.

Specially the paragraph saying “After running the import script it may be impossible to roll back to the older version of the theme without a backup of the database!” makes me feel sketchy about updating.

The best way its make a clean install and configure again your site. This is the only thing you can do to avoid problems

Yes, best to think of this as moving to new theme, where most settings may be retained, but some will not for things which have completely changed.

So, having backups is always a good idea, just as if you were moving to another theme, changed your mind, then wanted to go back. Need to approach it the same way.

Sorry no magic bullet or once click upgrade. Obviously if some modules no longer exist on home page; then you would need to pick the new ones you like. Not a big deal. Make a simple home page with latest items, make that live. Then work on your fancy new home page and when done switch that version on.

Hi Chris,

Could you please clarify one thing about the upgrade process from 4 to 6 about these steps:

Updating from Newspaper 4:
We recommend that you do a clean update, meaning that we recommend that you delete the old version of the theme before uploading the new one. If you do a ftp update over the existing theme there may be issues. Please make sure that you delete the following files from Newspaper 4:

page-homepage-bg.php
page-homepage-bg-loop.php
page-homepage-blank.php
page-homepage-loop.php
page-homepage-timeline.php

Is the deletion of these files only necessary if you do an ftp update over the existing theme and therefore doesn’t apply if you delete the old theme and upgrade from the Newspaper zip file using WordPress?

Do you run the script you supply AFTER you activate Newspaper 6?

Is it best to deactivate all plugins except the Newspaper 6 plugins before activating Newspaper 6?

Thank you for your help – I appreciate it.

Derek

Ok. So guess I’ll just go with ftp deleting and redoing the whole theme then 🙂 I realise I have to put my site in maintenance mode during the upgrade. However, is there a way to run both themes next to each other (copy over the new files from 6 into its own folder) and developing the new look while the old one still is live?

No one have still answered my question about where the new theme finds information about the old theme settings when the old theme is completely deleted though 🙂

Hi,

You can install it on a development site and customize it if you want this. The old theme settings are imported from database if you run the script from Newspaper Welcome section (if you follow the documentation) – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ so you follow the steps provide there and remove the old theme.

Thanks!
