Updating the theme….

I am wondering if I update the theme now, it will erase few things I included in the current instalation, such as alterations in the htaccess, user.ini, custom css, function.php and so forth.

Will it erase the alterations i did?

Thanks

Any file you over-write, yes.
So you would need to re-apply changes to user.ini, custom.css, function.php.

htacess is not managed by the theme.

Basically if you over-write any file in the /wp-content/themes/Newspaper/ folder, it gets over-written to replace the original file.

I usually keep track of my changes, then reapply changes to the new versions, then delete old theme folder, and upload new one via FTP which has my modified versions of new files.

Hi Chris,

You again! Nice!

Will it change the way the sidebars are set? I created few custom sidebar and now I am afraid it will delete everything I did.

Hi,

Updating the theme should not affect your sidebars, only if you upgrade from version 4 of the theme you will need to re-add widgets as they will become inactive, but the custom sidebars will be imported if you run the script – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ Always make a full backup of your current installation.

Thanks!

Do you also mean that it won’t affect the settings I did in terms for example if next/prev articles are enabled?

Hi,

@zankkasz
What theme version do you use? Please check documentation if you update from version 4 and you need to run the script to import your old settings, rename shortcodes – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/
If you already use version 6 of the theme and you want to update to latest version 6.4, the panel settings should not be affected, only theme files modifications.

Thanks!

Hi Alin,

I had just tried to update the theme via envato toolkit, and it showed me the following message:

Destination folder already exists. /srv/users/XXX/apps/YYY/public/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/

What should I do?

Hi,

I think that the better way is to update via ftp, there is a video tutorial – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ I suspect this issue may be caused by folder/file permission setting.

Thanks!
