I had a similar problem like it is discussed her: https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/glitch-with-social-counter-plugin/ (Just for me it was the facebook and not the instagram counter). So I followed the steps recommended in that thread.
Just after re-installing the social-counter-plugin nothing worked anymore (complete white sreen in frontend and backend). The plugin does not even have to be activated, just being installed causes this problem. I did not change, installed or deinstalled any other plugins.
I deleted the social-counter-plugin folder then via ftp, so that frontend and backend are working normal again. Just I still would like to use the social counter – do you have any ideas?
Can’t I delete my post? Problem solved: I just discoverd that I installed a wrong version of the plugin – with the correct one everything works now. Thanks for your patience listening to my monologue here đ
I did not know that there are two versions of the Newspaper theme – when I just downloaded again I found the correct version of my plugin in the folder old_version. What is that about?

The correct version of the social counter plugin can be found in the theme settings here:

We do not recommend installing a different one because the version that comes with the theme is tested to work properly

There are still problems with this plugin. I needed to change the Instagram-Username. After the change, the counter constantly shows “0” followers. Caches are emptied and I deinstalled the plugin and installed it again – does not help. Ideas? Thank you!

Please make sure you type in just the username of the Instagram account, not the whole URL.
Also make sure your profile has the visibility set to public, otherwise the social counter will not be able to get information from it. http://smallbusiness.chron.com/change-instagram-profile-private-public-77852.html
You can try one more thing: change the Instagram user with another (you can use coca colaâs for ex: http://screencast.com/t/ZLpRPoP4zP0 ) the counter should update now and the right number of follows should appear and then you can switch back to your own user having the right number of followers.

You can also try to disable all other plugins except visual composer, clear your cache and check again.
