We are trying to update WP Engine to their newest upgrade and during testing we ran into an error with our template. The file showing the issue is single_template_2.php. Please let me know how this issue can be rectified.

Maybe you are using an old version of PHP, they seem to recommend 7.2
– https://wpengine.com/support/php-7-2-questions/
Those errors seem to refer to a rethink theme, what exactly is that? Please try and reinstall the theme fresh if you are using it, then update WP Engine again. Note that if you made modifications to the theme files these will be lost.

The error is visible when I am testing the new version of PHP. We are looking to move to 7.2 but cannot while encountering this error.
The Rethink theme is a child theme based on your newspaper theme. Are you saying the issue is there and not within the parent theme?

It appears to be, if possible try to switch to the main theme temporarily, then try again.
