After saving the user profile for one of the authors, then the url to the author archive got added several -2.

No other author is having the same nickname.

The theme does not add any numbers to the url’s. Please try to disable all plugins except visual composer clear cache and reset cdn files if you use it. Then test again.
If you still have trouble with this, try to switch to a wp default theme and see if the author url still gets the 2’s

I have tried your solution, however so fat without any luck… :-/
I have several times, after disabling all plugins (not VC) and having cleared all caches, tried to add more info to the profile of the author, resulting in thr url looking like this npk: …/author/businessr-2-2-2-2-2-2-2/
To me it looks like wordpress thinks there are two authors with the same name….but this is not the case.

I just took a look in the database, and could see that it is the user_nicename that increases with -2 for each saving..

Have you tried a wp default theme? Does this happen on all themes or just on newspaper? It could be a wp bug as the current version of wp seems to have a few bugs in it that need fixing. Maybe this is one of them. I cannot seem to replicate this issue on my end though. That is why I suggested plugins as I cannot recreate the issue.
You can also try to change the permalink structure and see if the numbers still show up.

Yes, I have just tried the default theme, and the problem is the same. In the database I can remove the -2-2-2/, but after saving the profile the numbers appear again.
I will try to change the permalink structure.

Unfortunately if the problem is also present without the theme, it is a WP issue and you will have to make sure WP is up and running properly before using the theme.
