7.1.1 is unusable in Opera 12.14

Hi!

After istalling 7.1.1 i’ve got several reports that my site became totally unusable in opera 12.14. The problem is that mobile menu is automatically acivated on opening the site on computer and can not be closed. That means the content of the site can not be seen:

I relly hope this can be quickly fixed, since this is not a minor design bug.

I have the same problem with menu, not from the new update but with the last aslo.

I have mobile nokia n8 with opera mini.

I try to see with your demo theme, but last time i tested, he don’t use mobile theme, then i tested with other website in showcase and they have the same menu problem.

Try to update the browser to its latest version: http://www.opera.com/computer clear all caches, purge the cdn files if you’re using then test again.

I do not argue that theme works fine in opera 38.0. I say that it does not work in Opera 12.14. And I can not force all users to update their browser if they do not wish to do that. Once again – I understand minor bugs in older versions of browsers. But this is not a minor bug, I want to repeat that site is totally unusable because mobile menu covers the screen and may not be closed.

Opera 12.14 is not the latest browser, but it is not that old, it came out in 2014. And many people use it, since it is the latest stable version of Opera before thay made total engine/design revision.

Should I understand your answer that all bugs (even serious ones) concerning not the latest versions of browser are not going to be considered and fixed?

I understand your point of view with regard at browser’s popularity. However according with opera change log last update for Opera 12 was released in April 2014. The web theologies from that time weren’t so much advanced as nowadays and most likely that version cannot render modern layout generated with latest technologies.
We cannot fix browser’s incompatibilities and best solution for visitors would be the use a newer version, or even latest one if possible.

Andrei, I really enjoyed the theme and the support. But the current situation is really strange to me. I report about a bug. A serious, not a minor bug with a theme in a popular browser. For my site about 15% of visitors use Opera. And every web-site in russian has similar fraction of Opera users.

And what response do I get? “We cannot fix browser’s incompatibilities”. Than tagdiv should specify at the product page that the correct work is guaranted only with latest versions of browsers. However, at the product page at EnvatoMarket I see something very different. There is a list of compatible browsers. There I see IE versions 8-11 and Opera among other. It is not lilsted “Opera 38.0”. It is listed “Opera”. That means customer expect stable work not only with the latest version. Otherwise that should be clearly specified.

And I want to know if the position you stated (“We cannot fix browser’s incompatibilities”) your personal opinion or is it the offcical position of the complany on the point?

Opera is a niche browser that has appeal to tech type users and version 12 is very old. Most Opera users update.

To put in perspective for other Newspaper theme users, 5 out of my last 15,000 page visits had a version 12 opera browser. Non issue really.

Note the main reason most are no longer supporting the old version of Opera 12x is lack of support for modern TLS ciphers; basically SSL1,SSL2,SSL3,TLS1 are all insecure and are being deprecated over the entire web, and most have to stop using TLS1.1 at some point and *only* use TLS 1.2.

This means old version of Opera won’t work with *any* https site that is setup properly very shortly. Much like old versions of IE which can never be updated for new security settings.

You should be aware of this issue if you rely on Opera for your visitors, and may wish to setup a sniffer to popup notice to update their version of Opera, much like Firefox did once upon a time, and even Chrome.

Especially on mobile, since this is moving to https everywhere, including shared/free SSL certs with new versions of Plesk, Apache, Cloudflare, etc., etc.

Basically Opera 12 won’t work with anybody running modern https — and so should be abandoned as an insecure and obsolete browsing platform.

This is not 100% specific, and just general comment. You need to research the actual specifics on all of this, but you can also learn about this in the Opera forums.

Opera 27 and up is the solution for modern mobile and website support. Opera 12 should be deprecated asap.

(( I don’t work here; just been dealing with webdev for 22 years, and our sites are PCI-DSS certified and we have to deal with infosec crap on daily basis. ))

I have this problem because i can’t update my nokia n8 and then can’t update opera to the last version.

@Sandman we’re sorry for this inconveniences.
We always test the theme with latest version of each specified browser because we assume that is most stable and with the security updates made. Most of our customers use updated versions for browsers which give a safer navigation on the web and we focus our attention to make the theme compatible with nowadays versions.
The only exception is IE. We still test the theme with older version of IE because is still quite popular.
However using an old version of any browser involve some risks as @Chris pointed above and some modern features may be incompatible with it.

A possible solution for this bug would be to remove the animation for Opera browser. Like that browser will not have to handle that animation. To remove the animation edit td_js_generator.php file and add this code here: http://screencast.com/t/5L76KylJ

Thanks to everybody for the discussion. Special thanks for Andrei for the instruction how to switch of animation in Opera!

I very well understand how difficult it is to make any theme compatible with variety of browsers, especially when they are built on different technologies. I am sure, Andrei, that all your customers (including me) have the latest versions of browsers. But we are people who build sites, not that who look them 🙂 And we do not have power to force our users for incessant update towards latest versions of browsers. Especially when some of them do not understand what browser is 🙂 I would close my eyes on any minor incompatibility issues (like pictures are not on the place, slider is now working etc.), but I can’t do it when users can’t see the site at all! When people call you and say “I can’t see your site anymore. What happened?”, you have to find the solution.

Of course, I could think of some hack how to fix this behavior. But you know the theme code from A to Z. And I am sure that your solution is much better than any I could suggest myself.

I got used to the fact that Newspaper support us really one of the best at the market. That is why it was very strange for me to get the response like “this is not our problem”. I wish for Newspaper to remain the world best theme with the world best support 🙂
