If I enable the 7-day popular option it says there will be a small performance hit? Does this mean, during each page load or just that there will be some backend process running at times?

Hello,
Yes, there will be a counter working extra to keep track of all the posts from the past 7 days and filter them by popularity. Each option you activate will result in a slight performance hit as the theme has to work extra for each one. If you want top loading speeds you need to keep things as simple as possible. if you activate too many options and use too many different complex elements on your site, the page speed will go down as there will be more requests to handle.
