Hello, dear Developers Team!
A wish for future versions of the Theme.
Sorry for my bad English but I will try to explain.
Make please option for “Generating thumbnails featured images only”.
A small example: for uploaded images only to one post of a total size of 1.5 Mbytes generated images total size of 10 megabytes.
Why generate so many thumbs with different sizes for the inner images that more will not be used anywhere?
For internal images, as I understand it, it is enough to generate a few thumbs, for example, to display the gallery.
Over 2 years of using this Great Theme preview the junk accumulated on hosting more than 3 gigabytes.
Thank you for understanding!
With respect to your work
Edward
Hello Edward,
Please keep in mind that for each activated thumb from theme panel, the theme will prepare properly thumbs,
whether it is used as featured or not. Notice that this is the general theme behavior. It is not a simple task of implementing and also, we no planning for implementing this task, sorry!
Thanks for your understanding!
Hi!
I’m having the same problem with the featured images. Just bought your theme for my website and it is amazing, but now I have a really bad problem of space on my server for the inmense quantity of thumbnails generated by the theme. I can disable some of the thumb options, thouth I’ll have to lose some blocks on the design. But it’s going to be a problem if for every image I upload (and I usually upload 2-3 images per post, besides the featured image) the theme generates 4-5 thumbnails.
I know they’re not going to occupy a lot of space, but my site is a news site with 7-8 new articles every day. So it’s really going to be a problem having every image creating new thumbnails.
I guess it’s not an easy request, but it’s a major setback from the overall experience.
What you can do, and what is commonly done in WordPress news portals, is upload images via FTP into an /images/ folder, and then put the explicit URL for the image in the HTML of the article, and don’t use the media manager except for the featured image.
Note that WP makes images from anything added to the media manager, per the default sizes shown on the settings > media page for *all* themes, defaulting to those most commonly used by the default blog themes included with WP.
So, *all* themes follow this behavior by adding additional add image classes to fit theme layouts, and for this theme they can be disabled based on the theme panel.
The only solution that works across all themes, is to simply use the FTP method for common images, and then use the media manager only for the ‘featured’ image for a story.
Anyway, that’s how we’ve done it the past 12 years on our news portals.
That’s a good idea! And never thought about it. In fact I never worried about the thumbnails until we switched to a new server with better bandwith but limited space; and when I installed this theme and checked the folders found out I have thousands of unusued thumbnails.
I’m guessing if there’s the chance to stop wordpress from generating thumbnails for ALL images, upload them via the Media manager and then force regenerate only the featured images. Don’t know if that can be even possible.
I use Newspaper Theme and I can say you I solved this issue. I use 2 plugins for saving space in my hosting:
- WP Smush – it helps for reducing image size (but there are other tools)
- Optimize Images Resizing – it improves WP image sizes generation and save your hosting space
With Optimize Images Resizing you will have a thumb generated only if it is needed by your theme.
I had some categories in a block, others in other blocks. I had 10 different thumbs for each image: it was stressful. Now I have only 2-3 thumbs for each image.
Maybe this advise can help someone.
