I was trying to switch one web to Newspaper theme and after activating td-composer got total crash with 500 Internal server error both front/back end. It is caused just by activating composer, disabling it fixes problem – but theme doesnt work ofc. Using latest version 11.3.2
Tried removing all other plugins to avoid possible conflicts, but situation remained same. Requirements for theme should be ok:
PHP Version 8.0.13
WP Memory Limit 256 MB
PHP Execution Time 300
PHP Max Input Vars 5000
Only problem is that WP doesnt have direct access to files and using ftpext, but didnt have any problems with that on my other websites run on same hosting. Only difference is that other sites have older PHP, here is new 8.0.13.
After activating WP Debug I got this message
Fatal error: Uncaught TypeError: ftp_fget(): Argument #1 ($ftp) must be of type resource, null given in /var/www/mysite/www/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-ftpext.php:146 Stack trace: #0 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-ftpext.php(146): ftp_fget() #1 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/includes/wp-booster/wp-admin/plugins/class-tagdiv-theme-plugins-setup.php(342): WP_Filesystem_FTPext->get_contents() #2 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/includes/wp-booster/wp-admin/plugins/class-tgm-plugin-activation.php(1977): tagdiv_theme_plugins_setup->theme_plugin_has_update() #3 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/includes/wp-booster/wp-admin/plugins/class-tgm-plugin-activation.php(1836): TGM_Plugin_Activation->does_plugin_have_update() #4 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/includes/wp-booster/wp-admin/plugins/class-tgm-plugin-activation.php(422): TGM_Plugin_Activation->is_tgmpa_complete() #5 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(303): TGM_Plugin_Activation->init() #6 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php(327): WP_Hook->apply_filters() #7 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-includes/plugin.php(470): WP_Hook->do_action() #8 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-settings.php(578): do_action() #9 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-config.php(104): require_once(‘…’) #10 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-load.php(50): require_once(‘…’) #11 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-admin/admin.php(34): require_once(‘…’) #12 /var/www/mysite/www/wp-admin/plugins.php(10): require_once(‘…’) #13 {main} thrown in /var/www/mysite/www/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-ftpext.php on line 146
Hi fonetechcz, please try a lower php version, the last one tested with our theme is 8.0.9
Also maybe this is from some settings on host, we can check it, for this please contact us via email at contact@tagdiv.com ad provide wp-admin and cPanel access. We’ll check it as soon as possible!
Thank you!
It is not possible to downgrade php for me, its fixed by hosting and I can select from 8.x only 8.0.13 or 8.1. But there shouldn’t be many changes in between 8.0.13 and 8.0.9. Also you announce compatibility with PHP 7+ so I thought that it should be fine.
Culprit of this problem seems to be ftpext access to filesystem, but I even tried to put FTP login info to wp-config.php to avoid WP asking every time when it has to work with files. Unfortunately it didn’t help.
Access to website is now pointless, because I had to move it back to older PHP and original theme – I need it working. Will wait a bit with migration and upgrade before you test newer versions of PHP.

Hi fonetechcz,
IF you want we can take a closer look, maybe the problem to not be from php version, but for this you’ll need to contact us at contact@tagdiv.com and provide wp-admin and cPanel access also, include the link of this topic to find you faster. In this way we can investigate and see from where the problem is.
Thank you!
Hi,
same issue here. I have tried on a fresh site we have only Newsmag. As soon as upgraded to 8.0.13 (only one available at WPEngine hosting), the website break -> There has been a critical error on this website.
We tried to disable all plugins as it is a new site and still the problem is there until we switch back to 7.4 (only other option available).
Can you please advice?
Our website is https://pennsylvaniasafebetting.com/ (now we have switched back to 7.4)
