I get a message that I should activate the theme again – why?

I think you have to re-activate if you upgrade from 3x to 4x; as new theme; or if you uninstall a demo and go back to the default setup.

Hi,
Once activating the theme, it will not require another activation. It needs to be activated only one time. Unless maybe something is affecting the database and resetting the activation. That can be caused by plugins, or maybe something in the server configuration. Try and activate it, deactivate all non-theme plugins and monitor the situation to see if there still is an issue.
