Activated Theme, Images No Longer Showing

I’m on Web Synthesis hosting.

I activated Newspaper.

Since then none of my images are showing on the site or in my Media folder.

It looks like the links to the images are all broken.

Theme cannot break image location or remove items from your media lists/folder.

You should regenerate thumbnails to fit news sizes used in theme.

If you check your media/uploads folder via FTP, you might be able to check on the permissions for that folder. If you accidentally deleted that, it would not be recoverable; hopefully you backed up your site prior to making major changes.

An example image link, like so – does appear missing:

However installing the theme does not delete your /uploads/ folder unless you did that manually. If you deleted the /uploads/ folder, or the /wp-content/ folder for some reason, then that would have deleted the images folder.

Ideally you should double check with your hosting provider in case they have some bizarre setting which impacts that folder in some way.

I will check with Web Synthesis to see what’s up.

This happened immediately after activating your theme so there’s definitely a connection.

I’ll see what they say.

I did initially upload the wrong zip file and had to delete that.

But I’m pretty careful and it confirmed at the time it deleted that file.

I should clarify the media folders are still there. It’s just the images that are missing.

I’ll update when Web Synthesis gets back to me. They are one of the top managed hosts so we’ll see what’s up.

Well, if the image isn’t loading in the web browser directly, the image isn’t there. If the folders are still there, but all the images are removed, that is not normal and should never happen unless those files were put there by some plugin which removed its stuff when plugin disabled – also not normal.

A theme cannot “delete” all your image files as it would need to run a script to delete all files inside a folder. And that’s particularly difficult with date based images.

Not my theme. Just helping out as I’ve been using the theme for a year now.

SO, again this image being “gone” from the folder, is a separate unrelated issue to setting up the theme.

but the images are gone from inside of it; that’s huge issue.

Of course, simply upload your backup of all the image folders into /uploads/ and would be fine.

I see what you’re saying. This doesn’t really make any sense.

I’m just realizing now that despite all this talk about customer service these guys at TagDiv haven’t said anything.

They usually give great support; keeping in mind it’s the holidays many places this week; and also time difference as they are in Eastern Europe, I believe (I’m in Calif.). I also believe they are one person short as of December, and dealing with that change.

Of course, in this particular instance, not really a theme issue.

But anyway…. I’m just poking my nose in as I use their stuff, and also in midst of a huge dbase ecommerce migration ,blah blah thing this month and have to do these hurry up and wait, then watch one of my screens to see if something breaks, and then stop and fix, but then I have 10 minute blips where I can’t really get too involved with too much as then I cant’ watch the automated stuff… and so, wasting some time here helping others since I have the little bits of time to “waste” right now.

But also to give back for the TONS of support I needed back in the day with WordPress, and so know what it’s like when stuff just makes no darn sense! :_)

I hear you.

The community helping each other is what kept me involved with WordPress to this point.

And I’m trying to work with companies that are known for support but that only goes so far.

If I had the money I wouldn’t even be dealing with the backend of things or getting themes off the rack. Oh well.

I should also say that the TagDiv folks have been incredibly patient with a lot of people who don’t bother to read the users guide for WordPress then want support on “why don’t my comments box work” (um, turn it on in your WordPress panel?), kind of things.

They are way more patient than I would be with “RTFM” kinds of things.

I’m also astounded they will often help people write CSS for a plugin to use with the theme, when it’s not a theme related issue in any way (e.g., Google AdSense search box), or similar things where folks want to hack the theme but don’t want to learn ANY CSS at all, and just expect free coding work. For $50 some people have very unrealistic expectations on hand holding and not learning the stuff on their own that every WordPress user should learn BEFORE they buy a theme.

But I digress….. put another way, TagDiv folk have given some clients $500 worth of tech support on a $50 theme, which blows my mind.

THAT speaks a lot to their commitment to their clients; very few theme devs would do that much work. Even clients who change their site 3 months later, then want more help after throwing out all the stuff they got help on the first time.

I appreciate that. You have the bigger picture here and what you’re describing fits my initial impressions based on reading comments, etc.

I think they should make the move to annual fees to be honest. Unlimited lifetime support for such a low payment doesn’t make sense and doesn’t reflect the value that I believe the product has.

Happily, Synthesis only had to upload my media file from yesterday’s backup and things are looking good.

I really want this theme to work. I like it for a lot of reasons.

By the way, they have no idea what happened either but I doubt they spent a lot of time on it given the ease of simply uploading the backup.
