With Newspaper, am I able to put display ads in the middle of a post. Some of my posts are photos only. I would like to have an ad show every 10th photo or so. Is this possible and how so.

Hi,
The theme implementation of the article inline ad will only account paragraphs

There is no possibility to make the inline ad display after specified images.
You could maybe use a ad inserting plugin instead, that has the options you need for the posts where you have only images, and no paragraphs
