Sometimes my site shows more than three adsense units – up to five, I thought this was not possible and that one of them should show as blank? Or is it something in the code of Newspaper?

The theme doesn’t enforce AdSense TOS, it is just setup to allow you to follow their TOS better. Choose which 3 ads you want to show and leave it at that. You could use other ad sources for the remaining spots. eBay Network is decent.
