I know there is a custom ad spot named “smart list X” but it inserts the ad near the header/title which I already have one set with a responsive adsense code.
I want to add content recommendation widgets (ie taboola) below my smart list posts. Anyway to do that rather than modify the theme files? Perhaps a way with custom ad slot 1-5 plus as a widget with VC maybe?

Unfortunately visual composer is not tested on posts. It can be used but some things may not align properly. You can try it out and see how it works.
I cannot offer a solution for this except use a different smartlist. The article inline ads will not work with smartlists and changing the smartlist ad position involves editing the theme files.

Where exactly would I put the Taboola code in the big td_smart_list.php file (and/or each individual smartlist template file) to render taboola widget under each item of the smartlist?

You will need to test this one out as i cannot say for sure if the taboola code will actually work or not. I have not seen this code and i cannot guarantee it will even work. You will need to insert it somewhere in the file and check if it changes anything. It will probably need implementation into the theme as well so coding knowledge will be required. It could not be as simple as pasting the code into the file. This is a customization that falls beyond what support can offer you. If you cannot manage to insert the code or implement it you can hire a freelancer to help out on this task from sites like studio.envato.com.

No need for a developer, but in case anyone else has the same question, it needed to be added to the Newspaper/loop-single.php as thats where the do_shortcodes can go to call my fb comments plugin and custom_ad_slot 1 which contains the taboola code.
