Is it possible to have the images auto-expand to fit the certain dimensions of the theme? For example the page “http://edmsauce.staging.wpengine.com/2014/12/01/richie-hawtin-pushes-speaker-on-fan/” and the Suggested Articles show images that originally were 600×600, but since this theme likes images that are rectangles, would it be possible to auto-size up and expand?

You could try a plugin like Thumbnail Upscale for that: https://wordpress.org/plugins/thumbnail-upscale/

This and Force Regenerate Thumbnails did the trick. Thanks!
