All modern themes use the built-in WordPress image thumbnailer which relies on the “featured” image to create thumbnails. Older themes used things like Timthumb to make thumbs on the fly.
We had the same issue, and found a plugin on envato called “Auto Post Thumbnail PRO” which will generate a featured image from the first image in the post and assign it as featured image so that all the thumbnails used by this theme (or most themes now, including those included with WP base install) will work.
It’s cheap and it works. To enlarge images if needed we also run “thumbnail upscale” plugin.
The combination does what we need on some of our 10 year old sites where, as you, we didn’t use ‘featured image’ as that wasn’t necessary or it didn’t yet exist.
Hope that helps!
Thank Chris!
There is another problem – when I create a thumbnail, then at the beginning of Lent always displayed photo (duplicated), as it removed?
I want to show only in the post inserted in the text of my photos (no dubbing).

Hi
WordPress won’t enlarge images, only crops them, so please make sure that your using an image at least by thumb size where the image will be displayed, otherwise will appear a grey space like here: http://screencast.com/t/naiqV53KvQ
If this is not what you mean please provide more details.
Thanks!
