What is the optimal size in pixels for the background image and how to calculate the space not visible because occupied by the body of the page ?

There’s no ideal size, if you want to display something to the left and right of the content area like for example – http://screencast.com/t/pyAJsNMxh you have to take in account the content area width – http://screencast.com/t/sOqVYa6E and create a background image based on that – http://demo.tagdiv.com/newsmag_fashion/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/fashion-bg.jpg
For best graphic results you could use a full hd image (1920x1080px), make sure you compress it, you don’t want a large file, it will slow page loading speed.
The only option that the theme has for the background ads is to set an url on it, to rotate it you’d need a plugin.

it looks like the theme only allows 1 background Click Ad – and if so it is for the whole site. Is it not possible to have a different Background Click Ad for different categories. Or to only have it in 1 category, but not the others?

Unfortunately the theme doesn’t have an option for use a different click ad for different categories, you will need custom modifications to the theme code and it is not an easy task. We cannot provide any type of custom work for the moment but you can do it if you have php experience or hire a professional to do this for you from sites like – http://studio.envato.com/

This seems like it would be a very basic function – especially as one of the highlighted features of the theme is that each category can have a unique background and sidebar. Why not make that unique background clickable?
Will this be integrated into a future version of Newspaper and Newsmag?

In the meantime, while this is on feature list, is it ok to revive this topic? We have the “Full Screen Background Image” plugin installed but with one issue: the plugin does not display the bg img to the left and right side of the content area. With the built in bg Ad manager, there is no issue.
Please help with how to make the bg img display on left and right of content area with the plugin.

We didn’t tested the Full Screen Background Image plugin with the theme I am not aware of its behavior with our theme. Testing a new plugin with the theme require lots of customizations and tests on different browsers and devices. This is a complex task and unfortunately I can’t provide a quick solution now.
If you need this and you’re not aware of the steps you need to take in this regard please consider hiring a developer or a freelancer to do this for you.
