Background Image (And ad) only on sides. How to enable a visible top?

Hi wonderful people!
I’m testing out the great background ad function. Following the tutorial and all dandy. Except I can’t seem to graps where to, or how, to control margins on the header in the top.

I’d like top part of my background image to be visible :

almost as you show in the tutorial (only the header seems transparent). I tried changing head types but didn’t manage to replicate the example.
