Does anyone know if there is a way to add a background image without the blog becoming boxed. I want to add a background but still have my header and main menu left in full width

Unfortunately this is not so easy using Newspaper 6, but you can start using this solution maybe it will help – https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/cant-create-fake-full-width-top-menus-by-coloring-the-outer-wrappers-in-6-1/
