bbPress support?

Hi folks,

I know that Newsmag doesn’t have native support for bbPress. But, is this something you plan for a future version of the theme?

Technically all themes have bbPress support, as Automattic has said they spent a lot of time the past year making bbPress so that it would work with all WP 4.x compliant themes. Meaning, they claim they’ve taken the hardship of theme developers out of the loop in worrying about compatibility, and made that their mission to manage – which is pretty cool.

So, generally “it should work” out of the box with any modern well crafted theme – it does not require special handling anymore by the theme creator (supposedly).

You may wish to spend some time on the bbPress site:

bbPress 2.x plugin for WordPress has built-in theme support. All required elements such as front-end editing are included. This means that all functionality will work, even when a theme has no specific bbPress templates or code included with it.

To get started customizing bbPress see Theme Compatibility:

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for the amazingly swift reply. Well done!

I did perform those theme compatibility steps — and much, much more — but I am still not happy with my final product. The theme is great though. Maybe I’m just not all that keen on bbPress. It’s really too bad though as I was looking forward to using bbPress for commenting instead of WordPress or Discus.

Thanks for the help!

Mark

You’re welcome 🙂

I don’t work here (with all my replies this month, you might think I do…. been actually implementing our site with Newsmag, so popping in to see if any issues I NEED TO KNOW about … while also dealing with a bunch of hurry up and wait stuff, so bit of a time waster here vs poking friends on Facebook.)

Yeah on the bbPress idea, though. I tried it awhile back.

Ended up going with Disqus just because most of the sites I tend to visit had started to use it, with couple of exceptions. It’s got a decent level of trust, and it also cut down on 99% of the spam comments and junk traffic we were getting even with akismet running. Seriously, it made a huge difference on some of our news portals. Obviously we also turn off comments on things like a fiction book serial as not relevant. But with news or reviews, comments are useful sometimes for visitor interaction.

bbPress is great if you want to have a LOT of comment interaction in a kind of “forum” setup. Great for traffic and SEO unless you have to deal with the troll culture.

In any case, we just ended up going with Disqus as the best sort of “it works” solution; much like some sites we use AddThis for the same reason. It’s so well entrenched on so many sites, it works very well.

Hi Lucien,

Could I made one suggestion?

I have implemented bbPress and it works fantastic now that I have all the settings figured out. I’ve also installed the “bbPress Topics for Posts” plugin, essentially replacing the WordPress commenting system with bbPress.

While the forum on its own looks great, the comments aren’t so pretty. Could tagDiv also look into this plugin and theming the comment area so it is a bit nicer looking? I know I am in the vast minority for this need, but it would be a nice touch.

Cheers,
Mark
