What is the best size image to use for a featured image on a post so that it looks the best? I would also like to create a template for our authors to use so that our images are the optimized size wise each time.
We use 800xXXX for Newspaper and 640xXXX for Newsmag. But you might want to try something else. Generally best to simply use the “actual size” in post for the template you use as the default.
Ok, so essentially can I use 1200×627 and have it be okay? The reason I want to use this is because I want the image to look great when its shared to facebook.
We use 500×375 images on one site (Newsmag) and they look great in FB 🙂

The newspaper theme has a few more features than newsmag so you need to be mindful of the block elements you want to use on your website. In principle, the image size suggested by Chris should work properly on newspaper as well although in some cases you will probably need the thumbnail upscale plugin for big grid 2 for example which uses a larger thumb (741×486) .
