Indeed we recommend to use flex blocks and flex grids, those are providing options for everything you need and you can choose the image thumb size that you want to use for that module.
Our theme images are based on thumbs that are created by the theme
Normally the image you are uploading should be at least the dimension of the biggest thumbs size you are using on your website.
