Hello !
First try to edit the functions.php from 1001 to 11 and it should work: https://image.prntscr.com/image/LJgOPaseQeWx88hn-pSKGQ.png
You can use the Newspaper v9.6 as long you want, unfortunately from Newspaper v9.7 the child theme support only the style.css file and functions.php, I can’t say that this will still be an option in the future.
Thank you !
I’m using the child theme and can’t roll back because I didn’t backup before saving. I also had custom work done on the child theme mostly the footer with a contact form. Are you saying that I can’t use the child theme anymore and I lost these changes I had made to it?
Hello !
The files moved into the plugin due to new Envato reglementations. The changes from the child theme are still there but you will need to re-edit all your changes into the composer plugin: https://tagdiv.com/updating-the-core-of-tagdiv-themes/ So all of your modifications are still active but our plugin overwrites them.
Thank you !
Hi,
The child theme included in the 9.7.3 package contains a modification in the functions file

If you use an older child theme, it may not work anymore or cause problems.
However even with the modification there still are some issues caused by the child theme. These are investigated and when they are fixed a new theme update will follow. We are sorry for this inconvenience.
Thanks

Hello. we have the same issue. Fortunately we first tried the update in our staging site and so we refrained from updating the live one.
So, I have a question: Are we supposed to edit the Composer plugin files directly? But, if we do, the changes will be lost in the next Composer update. Other plugins (eg. WooCommerce, TheEventsCalendar) allow us to put any customized files in a special folder inside the child theme in order to overwrite their defaults. Can we do the same for NewPaper?
Thanks
What are the older child themes that will have problems? I have refrained from updating because of this issue, unless there is a fix.
I’ve just done the change recommended to the functions.php in the child theme (from 1001 to 11) and now the 9.7.3. version of the Newspaper Theme works. I’ve spent literally hours hunting around trying to figure this out.
I’ve been disabling plugins, adding vars to my php.ini etc etc.
I can’t change my client for this as it’s a theme I recommended. Guys please put this child theme functions.php required fix in bold, caps, top of your forum etc. CHILD THEMES are how we try to avoid main theme updates screwing everything up.
The child theme is now quite limited, after the recent updates. Because most of the theme files were moved in the composer now they can’t be modified in a child theme anymore. The only way to modify them at the moment would be directly in the plugin.
If we should find a safer and more update proof way to do it, we will present it immediately. But for the time being it can only be done in the plugin directly, which will indeed have to be made again after a theme update.
One of the issues that are caused by the child theme after the latest update (maybe the most important one) is that when it is active, post templates can’t be set properly. Regardless of the post template set, seems that the default post template will be loaded. This and a few other issues are investigated with priority on our end.
Sorry for all this inconvenience. Seems that despite testing more, issues can still happen.
Yes that happened to us also. Is there a way we can fix this (except rolling back to a previous version) so our post templates will work again?
The solution is either to deactivate the child theme temporarily, or if that is not possible, to return to the previous theme version. If you need the previous theme version, send us an email at contact@tagdiv.com and we will provide it.
