Two questions:
1) I would like to include an excerpt on the big grid slide. How can I do that?

2) I would like to create a new post type to include only images as a ‘cartoon of the week’ section.As far as I know there are only standard and video type posts. My idea is to have an image slider linked to an independent page (archive/category page). Is it possible to do that? How?

Custom css is required to integrate the newly added element.

For the image slider you have to use a plugin, you could try Revolution Slider , see if it’s possible to configure it the way you want – http://revolution.themepunch.com/documentation/#installation
