Blog Post 'Last Updated' feature.

Hello,

As a news website, visitors like to see fresh content. But what happens if you provide new content to an old news post? Nothing, the same date still appears.

Now i know i could just change the date of the post, but a new feature that you could add by the side of the date (on a post) is ‘Last Updated: [DATE]’, so it looks new to a visitor.

My old theme had this option, but i don’t think this has? Is there a way to add this or would you consider adding it to a theme update?

Thanks.

We did this by adding a “News Updates” tag, and then used that as the selector to add a box on the home page for that type of content. No longer “new” news (since if you updated it same day, it would still be current news, with an update). For older news, like 5 days old with a notable update, we could then “re heat” it on the front page in a section for those who might be interested.

Not sure if that would work for you, but simple fix.

Oh okay, thanks.

If i wanted it to appear only on the posts itself, is that an easy modification?

I think you could add a widget for posts, then use one of the modules for that sidebar for posts. Same idea as what I did for homepage sidebar, just doing it on the posts. Actually, I do something like this for “editor’s picks” on the sidebar for posts to highlight old content, from tag “editors picks” — this way I feature some interviews from past couple of years which are standout content, but not remotely current. Try it … nothing will blow up 🙂
