Breadcrumbs

How are the breadcrumbs chosen for a post?

I have two posts having almost the same categories, and both having a subcategory as the primary category – however both posts are showing different breadcrumbs.

I thought the primary category would build the path for the breadcrumbs…?

Technically, a sub-category is always a secondary category in most schema as it’s the second port in the crumb trail.

Maybe an example of the two pages might be useful here?

Yes, it is fine with me that a subcategory is placed after the parent category. What I don’t understand is why one of the breadcrumbs is made of categories – not having been selected as primary category..?

The categories on both posts are:
Virksomheder (parent) -> POOZ S.M.B.A. (sub & primary) / ABC A/S (sub & primary)
Midtjylland (parent) -> Herning (sub)
Webshop (only selected on the first post).

It is fine with me that the parent category is shown, but why does one of the posts use this breadcrumb: BusinessR > Midtjylland > Herning > Nyt webdesign gav 30% mere i omsætning

When the following is selected?

Midtjylland
>>> Herning
Virksomheder
>>> POOZ S.M.B.A. (Primary category) Primary
Webshop

————————-

While the other post correctly has this breadcrumb: BusinessR > Virksomheder > ABC A/S > 16 nye økologiske varer hos ABC A/S

The following is selected for this post:

Midtjylland
>>> Herning
Virksomheder
>>> ABC A/S (Primary category) Primary

What are you choosing “primary category” with ? Yoast?

That only works with Yoast breadcrumbs, I believe.

Is it possible to choose primary categories without Yoast?

I don’t think so. Problem is, WordPress ‘free’ version has no such options as it still thinks its a blogging platform and not news portal platform.

On our main bsuiness siote, We ended up using NavXT breadcrumbs plugin with ‘order bender’ add-on to select primary category when a story is in multiple categories like books, finance, california, san francidso, and we want ‘books’ as primary.

But I still don’t understand why some posts show one thing with categories, and other posts show different things.

I think wordpress “category” goes by lowest ID number or alpha number for primary as default.

I solved the problem with the plugin: Post Terms Order.
