I have moved a site from another location and updated the database. All posts show up when you click on them from the home page and images show on the post. The thumbnails, however, on the home page do not, or on any other page for that matter. I did do a rebuild of the thumbnails.
Are the images set as “featured” for each post ? WP needs that to make thumbnails.
They were working on the previous site with the previous theme so I assume so where do you set that

You can set the featured image from post editor: http://screencast.com/t/fzThUQ0Nq1u Also try to regenerate your thumbnails https://forum.tagdiv.com/thumbnails-fix-strange-looking-images-on-blocks/ deactivate all plugins except Visual Composer, clear all caches and test again.
If the problem persist please provide your site url so I can inspect it closer.

The previous theme did not have a featured image section in it. The images embedded in the post automatically showed up as a thumbnail on the home page. The thumbnails have been rebuilt under the newsmag theme. The question is, How do I get the existing thumbnails to automatically populate all of the old posts?

There is no option in WordPress to do this.
I had same issue in moving one of our websites, and found the “Auto Post Thumbnail PRO” plugin on Envato/Themeforest/Codecanyon — which will take first image from post, or fallback image, and auto assign that to be ‘featured.’
Very old themes used to use a featured image ‘field’ in the post. But couple of years back WordPress added the featured image option — this is not part of this theme, it’s part of WordPress. So the “modern standard way” to assign which image should be feautured, such as for social media OG tags, and for thumbs, is to specify which image in a post is featured.
