cannot verify the code from google console

Hi there,
I have pasted the google console verification HTML Metadata in the <head> section, but even after updating the same, I cannot see the changes in the source code of the website. Hence my website is not getting verified- getting an error- “ownership verification failed”.
Kindly help with the same. I have been trying a lot to rectify, but couldn’t.
