I am trying to place an ad on a categorie page. However, every time I go to save it only saves the header and footer and nothing else. Just to be clear.. I can add the ad box and place the image and link inside but it will not save

When you save the settings and will refresh the page you will see the settings that you made are not saved.
So, please check the console.
