I can’t add an image to my categories – so when trying to use the subcategories shortcode – can’t get an image to display.
What are the best ways to check to why I can’t do this?

Typically it had
Name
Slug
Parent Category
About
and Image
When I go to mine there is no place to add an image.

That comes from wordpress not from Newspaper Theme. And as you can see here: https://www.screencast.com/t/orUm0SQEl I have deactivated the Newspaper Theme and plugins and it looks exactly the same.

Follow up question –
For the Category Background Image in the theme builder for categories . . is that meant to draw a picture from somewhere (say a specific category) or is it the same background image on a given template for any categories that use it?
How do you set it up in either case?
Hello !
You can create multiple copies of your category templates or you can use one for all of them.
If you create copies then you have to do the changes you want to each and every template. If not, simply edit the template and that will be rendered on all the categories.
For the background image you will have to import your image from your media library manually.
