I am having an issue where my category descriptions are not displaying properly on google but instead google is grabbing some of the footer or other misc text and using that as the category’s meta description. Almost as if the middle portion of the site is invisible/not there.
So I’m ending up with category links in google which all show the same meta description, this cannot be good.
I have reinstalled wp 6.2.2 as well as newspaper theme 12.4 and theme plugins and the issue persists
any light you can shed would be greatly appreciated

Thank you. I understand however, in the past I’ve left those fields blank google picks up the first paragraph of the article. this is no longer happening and something is severely wrong.

Hello Thank you, I had to resave each category meta description then it did seem to work in some of the cases. However I am seeing that there are a bunch of categories and some posts as well that are still not showing the meta description properly even though I check in the Theme and yoast and both are populated.
to elaborate, Some of the posts/category meta descriptions are incorrectly showing the footer text as the meta desc, or it displays meta description from a completely different category all together, or the category in some cases is showing a meta from a post.
Additionally even though I’ve toggled the /category level off in yoast, I’m seeing duplicate content in google results like this
example.com/category/postname
example.com/postname
@sonix32 Tagdiv Newspaper theme does not have SEO plugin. For SEO you need choose your own plugin whichever you prefer. There you can set manually meta description as you like it to show.
About Google search results or Google Search console, it’s totally normal that they show you duplicate pages like:
example.com/category/postname
example.com/postname
If you do not like it, you can change it in your robots.txt file to tell crawling bots how they should collect new information. Or change your sitemap.
Please avoid creating different sitemaps, if you use many different plugins and let them create different sitemaps then results in Google may get messy.
Also, you can check the Google Search Console and there you can also make some changes, including checking sitemaps and how and what you want to be shown in Google.
I know it’s a lot. SEO optimization and management is not easy stuff. Sometimes it may be very complicated. But Tagdiv sadly can’t help you out with that, it’s nothing to do with their theme. You can find plenty of SEO courses online.
NB! Just in case, for clarity. I am not Tagdiv staff, just another regular user of Tagdiv awesome products. Just trying to help you out with your issues.
