I’ve been using Newspaper theme since 6.0, now i’m at 8.1 and recently pagination under category pages not working. Is it a theme related issue?

Hi,
Could be caused by having an older version of the theme and latest of WordPress, if that is the case. It is always recommended to keep the theme and WordPress updated if possible.
After each WordPress update if there are compatibility issues they will be fixed and theme update released. I could not say if the problem you mention is caused by such a situation for sure. There were some compatibility fixes in version 8.2 of the theme, after an WordPress update. The issue could also be caused by plugins or theme modifications.
