I would like to change the color of the background of the area on top of the horizontal menu, just where the logo is so that it is similar to the footer. I would like this white area, not all the page, to be dark grey. Here is the link to the sample page I am referring.

If you are referring to the header background, there is an option to set a background color, in the theme panel

Also the header main menu and top menu can have a background color

In case these options are not helping you do what you want, please provide some more details about what exactly you want to change, a screenshot would be useful. I will try to give you a solution.
