I have added the Newspaper theme to my newsblog, which holds about 3000 articles, many have an image at the top. I never used the featured image option, but it seems essential to use it with Newspaper8. So how can I bulk all the images in the old posts (or just the first image) to become features images. Is it possible by fiddeling a little in the database? Or what. The quick featured image plug in cannot do it.
Most modern WP themes use the ‘featured’ image as the main image.
I use the Auto Post Thumbnail PRO ($14) on all our sites, the past few years. It will basically take all the “first image in post” and make it into the featured image; and if no image can use a default image you upload to the media system in WP.
NOTE: however, that for some of the templates you would then have (2) images — such as a featured image, AND your original image — so what I made the template with no photo as default, then for NEW stories I can use whatever template I want.
Anyway — I can highly recommend this – I use it on 10 sites, and have recommended it many times in this forum for just this reason! 🙂

Hi Chris. Thanx for the tip. I bought the commercial one and got it installed. Working now on file 123 of 3412- worth the money if it turns out right.
Thank for fast response

Yeah. We had the issue 4 years ago when we moved from an old 2011 in house theme we’d been using to Newspaper 1.x, and ran into same issue, as all our old posts had the photo placed manually after first paragraph. Exact same problem. The Auto Post PRo thing was only one that worked, and keeps working 4 years later! 🙂 We also use it because we have some child sites for regional news pulling in stuff via RSS from mothership, and so the image in main post gets converted to local featured image to make thumbs — so solved two big problems for us. Which is why I keep recommending it. And I love having the ability to have a generic news image on really old posts with tiny pix from when we all had smaller monitors …
OH! tip: the free ‘thumbnail upscale’ plugin also useful if you have issues of trying to make tiny images larger. Forgot to mention that (doh). Works perfectly with the auto thumbnail PRO plugin.
