Child Theme Basic Question

Hi there,

Just set up a child theme to work with Newspaper 8.5, using the files present in the /code folder. But the Child Theme tutorial for Newspaper specifically says not to use the Child Theme API, so I wanted to clarify one thing.

Do I customize the child theme via the “Customize” button on the child theme itself in the Appearance/Themes section, or do I customize the parent Newspaper theme and make all changes there THEN activate the child theme? What is the best way to work with the child theme?

Activate the child theme and customize it to prevent your custom css from being overwritten when updating the parent theme. You have two options to customize the child theme. You can use the customize option in the appearance section (I use that because it enables me to see live edits) or the Custom CSS option on Newspaper>Theme Panel>Custom Code> Custom CSS.

Thanks for the reply! I don’t have custom CSS written up yet and am still tweaking the Newspaper base / layout settings, so I’m making changes in the Newspaper Theme and then once I’m ready to enable the custom CSS, I’m going to activate the child theme and use the customize option so I can see live edits.

If that works, I’m all set- thanks again for your recommendations!
