Good morning,
I have very little idea what I’m doing, so I was hoping you could point me in the right direction.
I have version 1.7 of newsmag right now, and wanted to upgrade to 3.0 but I haven’t been using a child theme.
I’m certain I’ll lose a lot of changes to the site when I update. Is it possible to get around this at all and not lose the changes to the site?

Have you made in changes in theme’s core files? If so you will have to keep track your changes and after the update it’s made re-add them in new files. If you didn’t made changes in theme’s files then you can’t update without any risks. Theme’s settings are saved in database not in theme’s files so they won’t be lost during the update.
However as a security measure make sure you do a full backup to your current wp-install and the database: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
