I am typing this to see if I royally screwed up.
I bought and installed the Newspaper theme 2 weeks ago. I uploaded the parent theme to my WordPress installation. I then zipped up the 2(?) files that were in the child folder and installed it as a child theme in my WordPress installation. It installed fine and I activated the child theme. I did all of my changes using that child theme. (It shows as Newspaper 7 child theme, although I had bought the Newspaper 9 theme.)
I am now looking at the forums here and see that people have trouble with child themes and perhaps shouldn’t be using them. I guess my questions are below…
Am I safe? Did I royally screw up my site by doing my setup on the child theme that I zipped up and installed? Or am I safe and with the next update, my parent theme will get updated and my site will get updated, with all of my customizations (setup) safe.

Since Newspaper v9.7 the child theme is working only for the functions.php and style.css files.

Unfortunately I can not say if there will be some problems, or not with child theme in coming updates, the better solution will be to not use the child theme only if you rely need of it; also, now you can make a lots of customization using tagDiv Composer , Header Manager and tagDiv Cloud Library.
