“A child theme is not update proof. The files you add to your child theme will have to be replaced if they have been modified by a theme update.”
Does that mean what it says? If so, it is not really a child theme because by WordPress definition, a child theme can NOT be over written by an update.
If the child theme directory is in the wp-content/themes directory, how could those files be modified by an update?

I think that is a miss understanding, the child theme will not be over written, but it is possible after you make the theme update to make some changes in child theme or maybe you’ll need to use the child theme from that theme version.
