I understand that it is best practice to use a child theme so that your customizations are kept intact whenever you do updates. I see that the Child theme can be found in the code file that comes with the theme. Inside this file are two zip files, td-api-plugin-1.0.2 and td-custom-post-type. Are these the child theme zip files that you would use and which one would you use? I was hoping to find a zip file called “newspaper child theme” that I could upload directly into my themes section and activate.

Thank you for your reply. I changed the file into a Zip file and uploaded it and found that I could activate that. Should have thought of that in the first place. However, I have also gone to the links you provided for me and I am starting to think that it is not a good idea to use the child theme at the moment and that you are better off just doing everything in the main theme. Can you confirm for me that I am better off not using the child theme as I am no expert and want to minimise problems?

Hello,
It depends on each one’s opinion. In my opinion (personal opinion) it’s a waste of time, but some argue about this and prefer the child theme. Even if using a child theme you still have to replace the modified files so it becomes useless. You can simply keep track of your modifications and make them in the main theme.
But this is just my opinion. You should do what you consider best for your project. If a child theme seems safer, you can go with it.

Thank you for your reply. Can you please clarify for me what sort of modifications you need to keep track of and fix after you make an update. For example are changes you make from the default settings using the tools, buttons, checkboxes, dropdowns, etcetera, that are provided by the theme, modifications that you would need to keep track of when you do updates or are the changes you make through coding to files like the php.functions file and stuff like that, the modifications you need to keep track of or do you need to keep track of all or any changes you make. I hope I have explained this well enough so that you can understand what I mean.

Hi,
The child theme is only used for modifications made in the theme code. In the php files. The setting you make in the wordpress dashboard have nothing to do with the child theme. A child theme is just for editing the phph files.
