Default Sidebar Is Gone

I have created a new sidebar in “blog and posts template” which I want to appear only on the Single Posts. On the Home Page I want the Default Sidebar itself. After I create this new sidebar, it is appearing both on the Home Page and Single Post. The Default Sidebar has gone missing. It does not appear any more.

Hi,

The sidebar set there will be displayed in the homepage if you use the default WordPress blog page, as well as on posts.
That is the first setting the theme will look for a sidebar for the posts.

Next in order is the sidebar you set for the primary category of the post
https://forum.tagdiv.com/primary-category/
All the posts will have a primary category, by default the first one alphabetically. Or you can set one manually. The sidebar set for the primary category will be inherited by the posts.

Next in line and the highest priority setting regarding sidebars is the per post sidebar
https://www.screencast.com/t/71rglN3AZh
This setting will override the others and display the sidebar you set.

Maybe this is helpful for you to set the sidebar you want for your posts. Let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks

I am using the latest version. In “Post Settings” there is no option for “Primary Category”. Below is the screen shot. You can see the difference between your screencast and the mine. Where to find this option of “Primary Category”.

Hi,

That setting is per post, it is located in the single post edit screen

Bit confusing. If I choose a Category and then a Custom-Sidebar WITHIN a specific Post in the EDIT area then, as I understand, this would only apply to that Post. The next Post would still have the default settings and show the default Sidebar. How do I make the Custom Sidebar display across ALL Single Posts.

A sidebar set in the post edit screen will have priority over all the other conditions. If you leave it on default, then the sidebar from the primary category will be picked.

If you want to set a specific sidebar for multiple posts at once, set that sidebar for the primary category of those posts. Then all the posts will inherit that sidebar.

That means, if I set a Custom-Side bar for a specific Category for a Post in the EDIT screen, all Posts of that Category will inherit that Sidebar – even though it has been set within a specific Post in Edit.

Have I understood it rightly ? If you confirm this, then I can go ahead and set up the website accordingly.

Also, could I have not achieved the same thing by selecting/creating a sidebar for each Category in the “Per Category” setup under “Categories”. Since this is specific to the Category, all Posts of this Category should inherit from here. I tried but it does not work. What is the purpose of this setup ie in “Per Category”. In my view, instead of setting up within the Post in Edit, it should be setup here and then inherited.

It is not working. I have created two categories. “Home-Category” and “Front-Page”. Each alternate Post I have put in one of these Categories. (Title also contains the Category to show what Category this Post is in. This is just a test site.) I have created two sidebars “Home-Category-Sidebar” and “Front-Page-Sidebar”.
I have Edited the first Post to select “Home-Category” and “Home-Category-Sidebar. In the next Post I have Edited to select “Front-Page-Category” and “Front-Page-Sidebar. In the “categories” setup under “Per Category” I have kept default Sidebar.
Now, whenever I click on any Post of “Home-Category” the custom sidebar shows correctly. But for ALL the “Front-Page” Category Posts , the custom sidebar does not show at all.

Have a look at http://www.workagain.in/

I also tested this functionality. For example this post has the primary category Fashion
https://www.screencast.com/t/iHgalMsXC
Now I set a sidebar for the Fashion category
https://www.screencast.com/t/qxoG6cvrps
That sidebar contains these elements – https://www.screencast.com/t/Z5Gu7pWIx4J

Now that sidebar is displayed in the category page
https://www.screencast.com/t/UtTs1CXcrkKm
Also for the post which has this as a primary category
https://www.screencast.com/t/ohTJuNh2sh

So the same should happen for you. Like this category page and this post

Only difference is that you setup the Primary Category inside the Post EDIT while the Custom-Sidebar was set in the “Per Category” template and not in the Edit Post option. I have done the same as above. No change in result. Home Category continues to be fine. Does not show up for Front-Page Category at all.

Can I privately send you my admin Login/Password since it is a test side and you can help me setup this facility in it.

But that is where the primary category can be set only, in the post edit screen
https://www.screencast.com/t/nDtaAtj8uN
Then leave the sidebar setting on default – https://www.screencast.com/t/wWpRGBzllOn
Set a sidebar for the category chosen as primary in the Theme panel->per category settings
https://www.screencast.com/t/2ImncejhJ
That would be all that has to be done to ensure that multiple posts that share the same primary category, have the same sidebar.

If you have already tried it like this and it is not working, then there is a problem. Deactivate all plugins except theme plugins as a quick test. If you made any modifications to the theme code files or added code in them, remove them and check. If you use a child theme, deactivate it and check again.

I tested on my end with the latest version of the theme, theme plugins and tested plugins active. Let me know what you find.

Thanks, Simion. It worked. It was probably the cache. I must put on record the superb quality of service that you have provided. With patience and examples. Just great work.
