Disabling Comments

Hi.

When I get 250 comments on one of my posts, I manually disable the comments for that page in the ‘allow comments’ box.
However, every time I do that, the comments are not visible any more on that page. In other wordpress themes, it was possible to remove the ‘reply to’ option and keep the previous comments visible. In Newspaper theme I can not do it. Is there any way to disable comments from a post but keeping the existing comments visible ?

Normally in WordPress you do this by disabling the comments for posts after a certain time, such as 120 days after the post is published.

wp settings > discussion

I’ve never seen a theme which controls that data, personally.

Thank you Christopher for your support. You are always ready to help the community.
However, your answer is not exactly what I was looking for.

I know that I can use that feature of disabling comments after x days. I do it manually because I have many comments. I just go to the post that I want to disable comments and deselect the ‘allow comments’ box. Until today it worked fine with every wordpress theme I have used.

With newspaper theme it was different. Every time I do it, not only the ‘reply’ feature is gone, as expected, as all the comments are not visible any more. That’s why I asked if it is something to do with this theme. I want to avoid new comments but keep the old ones live. And I want to do it manually.

Got it … You want to be able to disable *new* comments only .. but keep existing comments.

So behavior
[x] comments off; turns off comment feature to disallow new comments; does NOT hide all comments for the post.

My version of the theme doesn’t allow that behavior. Nor does another theme I just tested. In the couple themes I just tried, checking “comments off” disables comments entirely. I think this is normal WordPress behavior, but I couldn’t find a discussion on a fix for this; as most folks are now
a) turning off all comments due to 90% spam
b) switching to Disqus as it’s become very popular and “trusted” for use in comments.

That is definitely going to be a Marius/Radu answer 🙂
