We use Discourse for our community and wp-discourse to integrate Discourse comments below posts.
The problem is that comment counts aren’t visible with NewsMag, this appears to be a newsmag-specific issue though as it worked fine with our previous theme and each of the WordPress defaults.
If it’s a Discourse issue, can you confirm what they need to support for comment counts to be visible? If not, can this be resolved?

The theme uses wordpress default comments system and the code used to display the comments number uses a default wordpress function – http://screencast.com/t/FPmiNK93jxrn
Unfortunately we didn’t do any tests with Discourse so i cannot say what may cause this, but you could check for errors in the browser console and/or disable all plugins except for Discourse and Visual Composer and see if the issue is still there.

That’s the strange thing, with the default WordPress themes the comment counts from the Discourse plugin do show.
I can forward links to a sample site which demonstrates this.
