that will put a permanent border on one div, but it’s not a divider between columns, I’m looking for a 1px border between 3 columns, this would be 1px right of the first 2 and then on mobile 1px bottom of the first 2.

That would be the only options to create a separator between columns, an actual divider can only be set for rows

I’ve gone another route and used different background colours to separate the columns, this has led to other issues as you know đ
I don’t see the Offset H and Offset V controls in Newspaper 9 – trying to create thin vertical rules (dividers) between columns. Are those the ones you need to get vertical rules as you show here? https://www.screencast.com/t/roOh2mhmn84H.
Is it true there is a vertical divider option in Newsmag but not Newspaper?

The default Newsmag layout comes with borders. If you want a vertical divider, you should use a bit of CSS code to add it.
